A Legacy in the Heart of the Karoo
Where Time Stands Still
El Yolo One is more than just a destination; it is a piece of living Karoo history. Nestled at the foot of the dramatic Swartberg Mountains, our farm features a beautifully preserved 200-year-old farmhouse that stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the region. The landscape is a canvas of wide-open plains and mountain silhouettes, where the echoes of the past meet the tranquility of the present.
Deep Roots: Klaarstroom & Beyond
Our story is deeply entwined with the village of Klaarstroom, established in 1874. Meaning "clear stream," Klaarstroom was a vital stop for farmers transporting wool from the Karoo to the harbour in Mossel Bay. In those early days, the abundant mountain water allowed farmers to wash their wool before continuing their long journey. While the original washing facilities have long since vanished, the village retains its authentic atmosphere with historic Victorian-era buildings and wide gravel streets.
The Gateway to Adventure
The history of our area is also a history of exploration. Nearby, the spectacular Meiringspoort pass was constructed between 1856 and 1858 to link the Central Karoo to the coast. This legendary route is famous for its towering sandstone cliffs and river drifts with unique names like Spookdrif (Ghost Drift) and Ontploffingsdrif (Explosion Drift).
Preserving the Land
At El Yolo One, we remain committed to the conservation of this heritage. Our farm is home to ancient Bushman drawings, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of the land's earliest inhabitants. We have also dedicated ourselves to creating a sanctuary for local wildlife, including eland, kudu, and springbok, ensuring that the raw beauty of the Karoo is preserved for generations to come.
Other Interesting Things at ELYOLO
- Meiringspoort (30km): The poort is a piece of heaven and a must to all visitors.
- Klaarstroom (23km): This little town is part of our heritage. The post office, butchery, shop, bottlestore owner and local engineering shop is owned by the same person.
- Cango caves (100km): This world heritage site and caves are absolutely unique in its kind.
- Swartberg pass (60km) towards Prince Albert or (100km) towards Oudtshoorn side: This is a dirt road pass and takes one back into history. It is specially awesome when there is snow on the mountains.
- The Hell: This is a very small village with a unique history. The road to the Hell runs from the Swartberg pass.
- Willowmore (66km): This tiny Karoo village will take you back in time.
